The Lakers recorded their second
league win of the season following this hard fought victory over
Donegal Celtic Ladies at Loughgall Country Park.
Few chances were created in the
early stages of the game with both defences playing well to clear
any danger. The Lakers first opportunity fell to Rebecca Capper,
however after a lovely through ball from Brooke Jordan; the striker
was unable to keep her shot on target when put under pressure by the
Donegal Celtic defence. Not long before the half, Loughgall opened
the scoring following a corner kick from Amy McCallister. The
winger crossed the ball into the box where Philippa Toal controlled
and played back to McCallister, who struck a left footed shot into
the top left-hand corner of the net.
The second half produced more
opportunities for the Lakers, the first coming as soon as 3 minutes
after the break. Toal did well to beat her marker before playing
the ball into the box where Jordan was unlucky to send her volley
just wide of the post. The second goal of the game came on 54
minutes when a long ball forward from Esther Irwin came off a
Donegal Celtic defender and into the path of Capper, allowing the
striker to calmly slot past the keeper and into the net. Donegal
Celtic responded immediately with a strong attack; however an
excellent save from ‘keeper Michelle Stephens thwarted this when
faced with two attackers running in.
Capper nearly added her second
of the game 2 minutes later but was unfortunate to strike over after
a goalmouth scramble. Fellow strike partner Toal also had a chance
just before the final whistle but was unable to convert leaving the
final score at 2 – 0 to the Lakers. |
