There was a return to Lakeview Park for Marty Verner who was making his first start for the Belfast side since leaving Loughgall last month.

Colin Malone made four changes to the starting line-up that lost to Ballynahinch United last week; Mark Stewart returned to central defence in place of Josh Finlay, Adam Pedlow was preferred to Paul Keenan to lead the attack, while both Aaron Willis and Mark Teggart were selected instead of the unavailable Davy Hawthorne and Stephen Doyle.

Adam Pedlow’s impact was immediate as he put the Villagers into the lead after only five minutes; Dale Malone’s corner delivery resulted in a goalmouth scramble that allowed Pedlow the opportunity to slot home from close range.

The Welders looked to strike back shortly after when Stuart King’s 20-yard drive was parried by ‘keeper Marc Robinson and left-back Jeff Brady performed a great last-ditch slide to deny Curtis Gallagher’s goalbound shot.

On 18 minutes goalkeeper Robinson had to be called into action again to deny Gallagher’s long range effort that was heading into the top corner.

Loughgall extended their advantage on 62 minutes from the penalty spot after away ‘keeper Michael Dougherty fouled Aaron Willis in the penalty area; an incident he received a yellow card for, allowing Malone to step up to fire home from 12 yards.

Willis, who was impressive throughout, roamed off the left wing to find space in a central area on 68 minutes before unleashing a low strike that Dougherty had to be alert to push past the post.

In injury time the Welders saw Dan McMurray shown a second yellow card for dissent, only five minutes after his initial caution for a late challenge.

Loughgall: Robinson, Hall, Brady, Hull, Stewart, Ferguson, Emerson, Willis, Malone, Teggart (S Doyle 81m), Pedlow (Keenan 81m). Loughgall, with much of the second half possession, struggled to find a cutting edge on a bog like pitch condemning them to a deserved cup exit.

Loughgall were dealt with two injury blows both for today and the rest of season as John Guy and Mark Carson have been ruled out of action for several months with a burst appendix and hernia respectively.

Boss Colin Malone made five changes from the side that lost to Coagh United in midweek; joining the aforementioned Guy and Carson missing were Mark Stewart, Johnny Kernaghan and Adam Pedlow. They were replaced by Chris Hull, Steven Ferguson, Alain Emerson, Paul Keenan and Josh Finlay. Niall Doyle, brother of winger Stephen, also made his debut as a second half substitute after recently joining from Killymoon Rangers.

Ballynahinch opened the scoring through Ross Hayes on 41 minutes; Gary Walsh’s header from a corner was cleared off the goalline by Jeff Brady only for Hayes to somehow smash the ball through a crowded penalty area and beyond goalkeeper Marc Robinson.

The lead was doubled three minutes later when Loughgall lost possession in midfield allowing Johnny Hunter to play a pinpoint cross-field ball for Ian McMullan who, with space, finished well.

Midfielder Hawthorne netted Loughgall’s goal in injury time when he collected a pass at the left hand side of the penalty area, he worked a shooting opportunity to slot home inside the front post for a well-worked goal.

As Loughgall searched for an equaliser they were undone by goalkeeper Brian McMullan on several occasions; in the 68th minute Hawthorne’s inside pass was met by captain Steven Ferguson who, from 15 yards, tested ‘keeper McMullan with a low strike. Ten minutes later McMullan denied forward Paul Keenan who rose highest to head Greg Hall’s cross on target.

Loughgall’s best chance of the second half came with 8 minutes remaining; Hawthorne beat the offside trap to square the ball across both ‘keeper McMullan and the goal for Stephen Doyle however he could only find the sidenetting from close-range.

Loughgall: Robinson, Hall, Brady, Hull, Finlay, Emerson (N Doyle 66m), Ferguson, Hawthorne, Malone, Keenan, S Doyle (Kernaghan 86m). Unused sub: Pedlow.

Ballynahinch: B McMullan, Walsh, Herron, Brashaw, Hayes, McKibbon, Hunter, Patterson, S McMullan, I McMullan, G McMullan. With these players missing boss Colin Malone was forced to reshuffle his starting XI and change his side’s recent starting formation; John Guy filled in at central defence, winger Dale Malone partnered Davy Hawthorne in central midfield while Mark Carson and Johnny Kernaghan were selected on both flanks.

The visitors raced into a commanding lead early in the first half thanks to Aaron Campbell’s quickfire double; on both occasions he converted after excellent play by Steven Park. On 14 minutes Park whipped in a low ball across goal for Campbell to finish from close range, and then two minutes later Park raced through the Loughgall defence before squaring for Campbell to confidently net from 15 yards.

The Villagers equalised in the 33rd minute when leading goalscorer Stephen Doyle received a pass on the edge of the penalty area before turning and firing an excellent shot inside the far post.

Campbell almost grabbed a hat-trick 12 minutes into the second period when he latched onto a forward pass and hit a superb strike from outside the area that was well parried by ‘keeper Marc Robinson.

On 74 minutes Steven Park worked a shooting opportunity from 20 yards out as Coagh looked to put the tie beyond doubt, however the talented midfielder fired wide.

In the 80th minute substitute Mark Teggart’s run to the byline and pull-back was met by John Guy, now pushed forward, however he couldn’t keep his first-time effort on target under pressure. Loughgall’s best chance came with three minutes remaining as substitute Paul Keenan won the initial header from Malone’s free-kick, alllowing Greg Hall to power a header goalwards and bring out a good save from ‘keeper Johnny Yorke.

Loughgall: Robinson, Hall, Brady, Stewart, Guy, Carson (Teggart 75m), Kernaghan, Malone, Hawthorne, Doyle (Fox 61m), Pedlow (Keenan 61m). Unused subs: Blevins, Symon Ferguson.

Coagh United: Yorke, McGeown, Thornton, Calderwood, Ferguson, Park, Campbell (Black 79m), Donaldson, Gillespie, Dallas, Scott (Clarke 85m). Unused subs: Noble, Anderson.
<img

Doyle’s second half strike was enough for the Villagers who also had Chris Hull dismissed in stoppage time after a skirmish with Marty Lavery.

There were four changes for the Villagers from Saturday’s draw with Coagh United; Symon Ferguson replaced Marc Robinson in goals whilst Chris Hull, John Guy and Adam Pedlow all came in for Neil King, Jeff Brady and Steven Ferguson.

On 16 minutes ‘keeper Symon Ferguson did well to come out of his goals to close down the angle for Gavin Cusack, however Adam Nesbitt will be disappointed with his follow-up strike as he failed to hit the target from inside the penalty area.

Doyle saw a low shot well saved by City goalkeeper Sean Morgan on 33 minutes before Ferguson was called into action to deny Cusack’s effort that was heading for the top corner in the 44th minute.

On the hour mark, Loughgall had an excellent chance to open the scoring when John Guy connected with substitute Johnny Kernaghan’s free-kick delivery however Morgan pulled off an excellent save to parry the close-range effort. The decisive goal came in the 68th minute when the impressive Kernaghan whipped in a dangerous cross for Doyle to convert at the back post.

City failed to create any clear-cut chances to level however they did come close through Cusack’s well-hit drive that Ferguson saved with his feet on 70 minutes.

The hosts almost made sure of the win in stoppage time when substitute Mark Teggart ran into the box and pulled the ball back for Guy to strike which was saved and deflected onto the post by ‘keeper Morgan.

Loughgall: Symon Ferguson, Hall, Emerson, Hull, Stewart, Malone, Hawthorne, Guy, Doyle (Teggart 87m), Pedlow, Keenan (Kernaghan 45m). Kick-off – 7.45pm

Colin Malone made four changes to his starting eleven for the trip to Coagh with Marc Robinson, Mark Stewart, Dale Malone and Paul Keenan replacing Symon Ferguson, Chris Hull, Mark Carson and John Guy.

The first half provided little chances for either side, with Alain Emerson denied at close range by ‘keeper Johnny Yorke after only 7 minutes. Yorke again frustrated Davy Hawthorne when he pulled off an excellent diving save to tip the midfielder’s effort past the post on 24 minutes.

Shortly after the break, Paul Keenan pulled the ball back to Stephen Doyle who tried a first-time chip from 20 yards that floated narrowly over the crossbar. Coagh threatened on 50 minutes when Stephen Park’s mazy run resulted in Jason Gillespie’s snapshot that was well saved by ‘keeper Marc Robinson.

On 62 minutes a smart attacking move between Jeff Brady and Hawthorne set-up Emerson who fired wide with his weaker right foot when well placed. United broke quickly from the goal kick with Aaron Campbell released through and he was denied twice Robinson’s parries, however Mark Scott was on hand to net the opening goal.

Loughgall hit back quickly and had managed to turn the scoreline back in their favour within 7 minutes through strikes from Hawthorne and Keenan. Firstly Dale Malone whipped in a pinpoint cross from the right flank that Hawthorne managed to volley into the top corner, and then Hawthorne slipped a pass into Keenan’s run and he hit a powerful drive that left ‘keeper Yorke with no chance for his 5th goal of the season.

Coagh made three substitutions at once shortly after as they looked to get back into the game, and their bravery was rewarded when substitute Johnny Black controlled an aerial ball before slotting past ‘keeper Robinson in the 79th minute.

The Villagers almost stole the win at the death however Hawthorne’s driven free-kick, which was heading to the top corner, pushed over by Yorke, and then the ‘keeper denied Keenan from a tight angle.

Loughgall: Robinson, Hall, Brady, King (Hull 45m), Stewart, Emerson (Carson 71m), Hawthorne, Ferguson, Malone, Doyle, Keenan. Unused subs: Guy, Symon Ferguson.

Coagh: Yorke, McGeown, Thornton, Calderwood, Ferguson, Park, Campbell (Hawe 70m), Donaldson, Gillespie, Scott (Black 70m), Clarke (Noble 70m). Boss Colin Malone made two other changes with Chris Hull replacing Mark Stewart in defence, and new signing Mark Carson replaced Dale Malone on the right flank.

The opener came after only 11 minutes when Alain Emerson directed Stephen Doyle’s left-wing cross inside the post for his 15th goal of the season.

Loughgall played some excellent football during the first half as they looked to put the game beyond doubt early on but they had to wait until just before the break for Emerson to put his side into a two-goal lead. On 39 minutes, Mark Carson floated in a corner that was met by the midfielder to confidently head home.

Loughgall continued to impress early in the second half as on 49 minutes excellent running by substitute Paul Keenan ended with him pulling the ball back for Emerson who found Doyle at the back post to slot home.

Celtic pulled a goal back two minutes later as a long ball down the right flank allowed Mehal Anderson to slip the ball past outrushing ‘keeper Symon Ferguson. Neither side really created any clearcut chances throughout the remainder of the game although ‘keeper Ferguson produced an excellent save to deny Stephen O’Kane’s close-range header, and Greg Hall cleared off the goalline in injury time.

Loughgall: Symon Ferguson, Hall, Brady, King, Hull, Emerson, Steven Ferguson, Hawthorne, Carson (Malone 59m), Doyle (Pedlow 59m), Guy (Keenan 45m). Unused sub: Stewart.

Dungiven: McDermot, J McNicholl, McMacken, E O’Kane, C McNicholl, Anderson, McGuigan, Boyd, S O’Kane, Boyle, D O’Kane.
