Loughgall successfully reached the 2nd round of this seasons IRN-BRU League Cup with a 3 – 2 away win over a dogged Glebe Rangers. The Villagers were cruising at half-time going in with a two-goal advantage however were pushed all the way in the second period for the victory.
Boss Colin Malone handed a debut to Steven Ferguson, who was extremely impressive in central midfield, whilst fellow new signing Stephen Doyle came off the bench to set-up Adam Pedlow for the decisive strike.
Loughgall opened the scoring in the 22nd minute when Pedlow slipped the ball through to Greg Hall who lashed home at the near post. And Pedlow also set-up his side’s second goal when he whipped in a superb cross which Marty Verner directed inside the far post for his first goal of the season.
Rangers were threatening with lobbed balls over the visitors defence and should have scored through Ian Parkhill on three separate occasions, however he was thwarted by the brilliance of ‘keeper Marc Robinson.
Glebe did manage to pull a goal back with ten minutes remaining when Villagers’ goalkeeper Robinson was unable to secure Tommy Elders cross after tripping up, and the ball was gratefully tapped home by the opportunistic Craig McAllister.
Loughgall regained their two-goal lead with one minute remaining when substitute Doyle reached a forward pass ahead of home ‘keeper Matt McGraw, who continued to close him down, and passed for Pedlow to work space for a shot before exquisitely chipping into the back of the net.
Two minutes into injury time, Tommy Elder give the home fans some hope when he sweetly struck a 15-yard effort across the face of goal and into the top corner. And Elder came so close to netting an equaliser seconds later when his 25-yard free-kick crashed off the crossbar.
