Loughgall travelled to Carrickfergus (Tues 11th May) hoping to make it four wins out of four against in the Davison Frudles Championship.
The game started poorly for the Lakers with stalwart centre half Claire Rooney straining her hamstring and being withdrawn after 10 minutes of play. While the Lakers took a 1-0 lead after an incisive cut-in and shot from right midfielder Marina Alvarez, they will be largely disappointed by a scrappy performance in the first half well beneath their capabilities.
Keeper Hamilton kept the host team at bay with a fine save from a Carrick free kick, pushing the ball onto the bar at full stretch while at the other end Lakers winger Zoe Wilson narrowly missed the chance to make it 2-0 before half time.
The 2nd half saw a much improved Loughgall side take to the field as they began to stamp their authority on the game. With some attractive pass and move football on display Alvarez’ pace again punished Carrick to make it 2-0. Alvarez turned provider after 65 minutes as she crossed from the right into the path for substitute Esther Dickson to tap in from 2 yards. Loughgall also hit the woodwork on two occasions with Janice Willis’ 20 yard strike hitting the crossbar and Phillipa Dougan-Toals shot from the left side of the box clipping the post.
The hastily formed centre half pairing of Jordan and Ervine dealt with most of what Carrick had to offer with a fine defensive display while keeper Hamilton had only a smart double save to make as Carrick sought to salvage a consolation effort.
The Loughgall team dedicated their victory to team mate Laura Simpson who’s grandmother had passed away early that morning.
